In 2021, MMSD continued to make great progress and serve our region amidst seemingly endless challenges. With the uncertainty of the pandemic and its impact on the economy, we continued to evaluate our programs and expenditures to be sure we were stretching our dollar to make the largest impact. We explored alternative funding opportunities and successfully secured a Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan to bring stormwater management solutions and water quality improvements to the region. We stayed flexible in our approach to public engagement and continued to offer both virtual public meetings and safe outdoor project tours. We affirmed our commitment to public health in managing the safe return to work for our employees and integrated the lessons learned from working remotely in our new everyday work lives. Our hard work paid off as evidenced by the numerous awards and recognition we received.
The 2021 Annual Performance Report is the final report under the 2019-2021 Strategic Plan. The Plan gave us important direction during an uncertain time and confirmed the importance of being clear on your mission, vision, and values. With unlimited possibilities in programs to pursue to better the region, the Strategic Plan gave clear direction on what to prioritize for the three-year term. We are proud of all we accomplished to strengthen our financial position, manage our infrastructure, build climate resilience, promote watershed cooperation, engage with our public, foster workforce excellence, and improve internal communication and collaboration.
This report reflects our organization-wide response to the uncertainty, the uninterrupted provision of essential services, and the adaptation, innovation, and unrelenting commitment of our employees over the past year. We encourage you to read on and learn more about MMSD’s achievements. As always, we welcome your feedback.
Be Safe. Be Understanding. Be Kind.
Kevin L. Shafer, P.E. Executive Director - Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District
