(Milwaukee, WI -11/21/24) The diversion of flows to the deep tunnel was stopped at 11:30 am (Wednesday, 11/20/24), but due to levels in the system, the diversion began again at 3:00 pm. The diversion ended at 10:30 pm Wednesday. We are monitoring conditions and will update you if it is necessary to start to divert flows again to the deep tunnel.
MMSD will continue to work to minimize odors. Please contactus@mmsd.com or call 414-510-6832 to notify MMSD of odors or concerns.

(Milwaukee, WI -11/20/24) MMSD has received numerous complaints of odors in the Bay View neighborhood. We detected strong odors coming from several drop shafts that connect MMSD’s regional sewers to the Deep Tunnel, which is about 300-feet underground.
Odors from the drop shafts are due to a combination of recent rain and diverting some flow away from MMSD’s South Shore Reclamation Facility to the deep tunnel to perform some maintenance work. The maintenance work has ended. The odors from the drop shafts should begin to dissipate.
MMSD is also aware of odors coming from basement floor drains and storm sewer inlets in the street. These issues require more investigation. MMSD crews are working with the City of Milwaukee to inspect these odors and find solutions to the problem. Residents may use contactus@mmsd.com to notify MMSD of odors. Residents can also contact Bill Graffin, Public Information Manager, at 414-510-6832.
