Working in the historic Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods on Milwaukee’s north side, Riverworks Development Corporation is a non-profit organization with a vision to help create and maintain prosperous neighborhoods and quality of life for a vibrant and diverse community of residents, businesses, and stakeholders. Running through these neighborhoods is a public recreational trail known as the Beerline Trail. Once a famous rail line known for transporting beer, the Beerline Trail has become a public recreational trail owned by the City of Milwaukee and maintained and managed by Riverworks Development Corporation.
Two destinations along the trail, Beerline Plaza and The Connector Building, serve as key community gathering spaces and include green infrastructure that both beautifies the spaces and helps to keep nearly 34,000 gallons of water from becoming polluted runoff. MMSD’s Green Infrastructure Partnership Program was proud to be part of these impactful projects by supporting the green infrastructure installations, which included a combination of porous pavers, native landscaping, and bioswales.
The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District gives Green Luminary® awards to businesses, organizations, and communities that implement exceptional green infrastructure design projects that benefit our lakes and rivers, as well as our communities.
