Today, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), Milwaukee Water Works (MWW), Veolia Water Milwaukee, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) would like to announce the One Water, Our Water: Explore Milwaukee Water Jobs Fair. This event acts on the recommendations outlined in the Equitable Water Future Roadmap, deepening our commitment to equity within Milwaukee, as it furthers our engagement to the work of the Milwaukee Water Equity Taskforce. As the Equitable Water Future Roadmap states, though Milwaukee positions itself as a water-centric city, its water workforce does not reflect its population’s diversity. Building a more equitable water workforce requires understanding and addressing the barriers to entry, particularly for people living in historically underserved communities.
The One Water, Our Water: Explore Milwaukee Water Jobs Fair is on May 12th, 2021, from 5-7 pm. This virtual event is an extension of the Equitable Water Future Roadmap to build water workforce equity in Milwaukee, by focusing on fostering greater awareness of water sector careers among individuals, groups, communities, and organizations within Milwaukee. To this end, MMSD, MWW, Veolia Water Milwaukee, and the DNR will provide information on the types of jobs that exist at each organization, as well as current and future job openings. Participants will be able to ask questions and sign up for informational interviews. Participants will also be sent workforce development materials and information on how to apply. The May 12th virtual event will be the first in a series followed by a fall event focused more on direct hiring.
The One Water, Our Water Event begins the process of water sector stakeholders collaboratively addressing these barriers through building awareness as a means to developing employment pathways. This virtual event is only a first step and the working group will be looking for more opportunities to further this work.
