What to Expect While Working with a Pipe Check Approved Contractor

Before A Site Visit: As a homeowner, you have the choice to select which of the Pipe Check approved contractors you would like to work with. When you reach out to a Pipe Check approved contractor, let them know you are interested in participating in the Pipe Check program. They will then schedule a site visit to come to your home.

During A Site Visit: The Pipe Check contractor will check inside and outside your home to identify the reason and source(s) of the water in your basement. In addition, they will also look for other sources of clear water entering your sanitary sewer system that could be exacerbating the issue(s) you are experiencing. they may also ask about any past issues with water backing up in your basement. The contractor may take a CCTV video of the inside of the sanitary sewer lateral to identify the pipe material, existing pipe condition, and possible defects with the pipe. The contractor will also locate the existing discharge locations of foundation drains, sump pumps, and rain gutter downspouts. If any of these discharge into the sanitary sewer, they will need to be disconnected and rerouted to a building code-approved location in order to qualify for the financial incentives.

After A Site Visit: The Pipe Check contractor will provide a quote for the work required to participate in the Pipe Check program. Also, your Pipe Check contractor will identify for which financial incentive(s) your property is eligible, based on their findings during the site visit. If you are interested in obtaining multiple quotes, you may contact more than one Pipe Check contractor. Please be aware that each Pipe Check contractor sets their own fees for a site visit, and may or may not require their own CCTV inspection to be completed. The homeowners are responsible for the cost of any site visit(s). If you agree to the terms and costs quoted by your Pipe Check contractor, you will need to sign a contract to have them complete the work. Once a contract is signed, your Pipe Check contractor will collect all MMSD required paperwork and submit for program participation. After a contract is signed, your Pipe Check contractor will coordinate with you to schedule the work. Your Pipe Check contractor will be your main contact throughout the process.

What Questions to Ask Your Pipe Check Contractor

Before the site visit:

  • Ask about the cost of a Site Visit
  • Confirm the contractor’s current availability

Homeowners are responsible for the cost of any site visit(s), and each Pipe Check contractor sets their own fees for a site visit. Ask what the contractor charges for a site visit before scheduling the site visit. Scheduling availability can also vary between contractors, based on time of year and how busy they currently are. Confirm what the contractor’s availability is for scheduling the work to be completed.

During the site visit:

  • Ask about which repair method is the best application for the conditions at your property
  • Which financial Incentives your property is eligible for
  • Ask for a copy of the CCTV footage for your records (If the contractor completes video of your sanitary sewer lateral)

Each property is unique, and each Pipe Check contractor has a wealth of knowledge and experience with sewer system repairs. Your Pipe Check contractor is an excellent source for education on different repair methods that may be applicable at your property. Depending upon what the contractor finds inside and outside the home during the site inspection, they will determine which financial incentives are eligible. At the end of the site visit your contractor should provide you with a copy of your CCTV inspection.

After the site visit:

  • Any follow up questions about the site visit

If questions about the information learned during a site visit arise after the contractor has completed the site visit, follow up with them for clarification.

If at any time, any questions or concerns arise that your Pipe Check contractor is not able to answer, please reach out to the Pipe Check team at MMSD (414-225-2250)
